An Overview of the Position - The FF/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) I Recruit is a full-time, paid, uniform, entry-level position in the Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD). The FF/EMT I Recruit learns and performs firefighting, emergency medical services and fire prevention in a combination of classroom and on-the-job training.

 

Major duties include

 

Emergency medical services (EMS) and firefighting.

Operating apparatus and equipment (fire trucks and ambulances).

Participating in fire prevention activities (public education, inspections and pre-fire surveys).

Attending drills, training and study classes.

Participating in a physical fitness program.

Participating in inspecting, maintaining and cleaning equipment and the fire station.

Participating in other related duties and assignments.

 

Qualification Requirements

 

High school diploma or GED at time of written examination.

At least eighteen years old at time of the written examination.

Good physical condition.

Must be able to provide a valid driver’s license from place of residence at time of appointment

(employees are not required to live in Virginia).

Ability to complete Fire Recruit School.

Ability to do prolonged and physically strenuous work under hazardous conditions.

Must be able to provide proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

Work Hours: The FF/EMT works an average of ten (10) 24-hour shifts per month on a rotating basis.

Reporting time is 7:00 a.m. The FF/EMT receives eleven (11) paid holidays per year and Inauguration Day, but must work holidays when scheduled.

Uniforms and equipment required and provided by ACFD.

Must sign a “Condition of Employment” agreement.

Arlington County requires that all new uniformed Fire Department employees be non-smokers and non-smokeless tobacco product users and sign an agreement stating that they will not smoke or use smokeless tobacco products on or off the job during their tenure of employment.

A good driving record and a clean criminal history are essential.

Applicants engaging in any activity that would support a felony conviction may not be eligible for employment as a Firefighter.

Convictions for DUI/DWI, Reckless Driving or Hit and Run, as well as multiple convictions for Speeding or other moving violations may result in disqualification.

Incomplete and/or inaccurate information in the background package may result in disqualification.

Conduct Outreach and Recruitment

Open Job Announcement, Advertise, and Post Exam Study Guide on Internet: The job announcement and Exam Study Guide will be posted online at www.arlingtonva.us/pers and the job opening advertised using a variety of resources.

Screen Applications: Applications are reviewed to determine if the applicants meet the minimum qualification requirements stated in the job announcement.

Schedule Written Exam: Applicants who meet minimum requirements will be invited to take the FF/EMT I Recruit written examination.

Administer Written Exam: The written examination consists of a multiple-choice aptitude test that may include measures of mechanical ability, ability to comprehend written materials and the ability to interpret a report.
Candidate Orientation: At the time of the written examination, candidates will receive a video orientation of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). This video and the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Guide – a voluntary self-study preconditioning guide – may be viewed online as well (www.arlingtonva.us/fire).

 

Conduct CPAT Practice Sessions (please read carefully): The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) CPAT requires that all candidates for Firefighter/EMT I Recruit participate in one or more of the Practice Sessions and both of the two Timed-Run Practice Sessions in order to participate in the Official CPAT. IAFF will allow candidates to waive their participation in the Practice Sessions and the Timed-Run Practice Sessions by submitting a waiver form. Details about the CPAT test can be found on the ACFD recruitment website (www.arlingtonva.us/fire).

 

Schedule Candidates for CPAT (please read carefully): IAFF provides candidates the option to request that their Timed-Run Practice Session be administered as the Official CPAT. Candidates who wish to make this request will be able to do so by signing a form at the time of registration, prior to taking the CPAT. All other candidates will be scheduled for the Official CPAT.

 

Administer CPAT: All tasks will be demonstrated at the time of the test. Admission to this test is conditioned upon the candidate’s signing a form releasing the County from liability as well as prior receipt of the waiver form if the candidate chose not to participate in the Practice Sessions and/or Timed-Run Practice Sessions. CPAT is a time-sensitive pass or fail test. After verification, CPAT certificates from other jurisdictions administering the IAFF CPAT may be honored as long as the date in which you passed CPAT is within six (6) months from the date in which you are to be tested by ACFD.

 

Fingerprint Candidates for Criminal History Check: Fingerprinting will take place at the CPAT Timed-Run Practice Sessions and the Official CPAT.

Ongoing Background Investigations (please read carefully): This includes criminal history, driving history, credit, employment, education and personal reference checks. Do not mail separately any transcripts, criminal or driving history reports, or any other documents directly to the Fire Department. Extend Conditional Job Offer: Based upon the Fire Department’s staffing needs, selected applicants will receive a conditional job offer.

 

Schedule Polygraph/Medical-Physical/Psychological Examination and Uniform Fitting: This step includes drug screening and may include other screening examinations as deemed appropriate.

 

Uniform and Equipment Fitting (Fit Test)

 

Notify Candidates of Final Job Offer: Candidates complete necessary Human Resources Department in-processing documents and are scheduled for new employee orientation.

What does an Operations Agent do for Southwest Airlines?

Operations Agents at Southwest Airlines provide legendary Customer Service to our Customers boarding the airplane by coordinating the work activities by the Ramp Team, Operations Team, and Provisioning Team. They are responsible for ensuring an on time departure and quick turnaround of the aircraft.   The Operations Agents also maintain positive relationships with all Internal and External Customers to ensure the success of Southwest Airlines.

 

What are some of the daily duties of an Operations Agent at Southwest Airlines?

 (Your duties may vary depending on the size of your work location.)

 Responsible for opening/closing of the Station at which they are working;

 Handles Station AMS and radio communications traffic;

 Prepares dispatch release forms and collects weather reports from informational system for Crewmembers and keeps all Station Teammembers appraised of flight and  weather information;

 Arranges fueling for aircraft as required;

 Prepares the weight and balance of the aircraft;

 Operates the jet bridge to aircraft;

 Ensures the timely boarding of the aircraft;

 Checks Cargo information for   each flight;

 Resolve Customer situations by providing Positively Outrageous Service;

 Completes paperwork and forms connected with work assignments pertaining to procedures of flight departures/arrivals, statistical reports on each flight and enters into Company's information system as required;

 May perform the duties of a Cargo Agent, Ramp   Agent or Provisioning Agent.

 

What are the Physical Requirements of an Operations Agent?

 Must be able to lift and move items of 70 pounds or   more;

 Must be able to carry items up and down stairs from aircraft to ramp area;

 May be exposed to a wide variety of weather conditions, jet and machinery   noises;

 Must maintain well groomed appearance and meet uniform appearance standards. (Agent's weight must be proportionate to height presenting a neat appearance in uniform.   Woman's uniforms range from size 0 - 26, men's range from waist size 27-42 inches.) 

 

Minimum Requirements

What are the minimum requirements to be an Operations Agent at Southwest Airlines?

High School diploma, GED or equivalent;

Must be at least 18 years of age;

Must have a valid U.S. drivers license with a good driving record;

Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
