The incumbent will provide translation and geographical names support services. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) translator will contribute to the collection, analysis, and evaluation of geographic names and translation of boundary intelligence found principally in foreign language sources. Accuracy and reliability are essential to the mission. Translator will also develop and maintain geographic names in GeoNames web/database (GNDB).

Principle Responsibilities of the Position:

• Translate technical and scientific materials into accurate, reliable, fluent English; may also require translating words, phrases and documents into the foreign language
• Analyze and evaluate highly complex foreign technical publications and prepare abstracts of material to support NGA research and production programs.
• Review the linguistic and geospatial accuracy of geographic names analytic output derived from others sources
• Responsible for analysis, evaluation and selection of NGA source materials for the standardization and application of all types of geographic names (populated places, physical features, political entities, boundaries, sovereignties, population statistics, etc.) and information related on mapping and charting products.
• Interpret and apply national and international policies governing the treatment of names as well as general guidelines emanating from the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (U.S. BGN), the DoS (Department of State), NATO (North American Treaty Organization) and other related organizations.
• Apply knowledge of world physical, cultural, and political geography, languages and cartography to provide NGA chart compilation elements and contractors with accurate and up-todate toponymic information for a considerable portion of the world.
• Provide authoritative responses to questions concerning the proper and correct usage of names, various Romanization systems and the treatment of descriptive information on NGA products.
• Use the GeoNames, GeoFeatures, Maritime, and Aeronautical (GGMA) production system, charts, and geospatial tools to produce names information for use in all types of NGA products and to respond to user questions via the Ad Hoc Query process
• Responsible for the accurate entry of data for the purpose of maintaining and updating the GeoNames web/database GNDB
• Accurately update project history information for published NGA products used by various Department of Defense components and other U.S. and foreign Users.

Responsible for extracting, generating and delivering reports/data

Education Required:

• Associates degree in related discipline or relevant basic knowledge and understating in international geography, cartography, toponymy, map reading, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), i.e ArcGIS or GeoMedia Pro

Experience Required:

• Knowledge and working proficiency of one of the prescribed languages or language combination:
  o Russian o Spanish o Turkish o Hebrew/Arabic o Indonesian o Japanese o Albanian/Serbian o Tha o Hindi o Regional Toponymy/English, required regional expertise over India and Bangladesh
• Minimum proficiency skill level 2 for reading is required, as defined by the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR)
• Fluent Speakers with an excellent command of the English language

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Demonstrate working knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Analytical and data research skills, i.e. library functions (query, ordering, etc.) and internet
• Strong time management and organizational skills to respond to multiple work assignments

Additional Knowledge and Skills: 

• Linguist or Translator experience preferred.
• Prior work experience with ArcGIS or GeoMedia Pro GIS software application is highly
  desirable.
  

Security Requirements:

• Top Secret SCI clearances for access to client facilities/systems and classified source materials.
• Must undergo a counterintelligence (CI) focused security interview and CI Scope Polygraph Examination.
  

FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt
Travel:

• Expected domestic travel within Washington DC metro and St. Louis area.
• Also may possibly require international travel to remote, high-risk and geographically diverse locations.
  

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

• Normally, works in a normal office environment with controlled temperature and lighting conditions.
• Morning and evening shift available. Potential overtime work may be necessary.
