MORE THAN A JOB FAIR

Building the Bridge Between Job Seekers and Opportunity

JobZone Career Fair • American Legion Post 176 • Springfield, Virginia • October 1, 2026

On October 1, 2026, I had the opportunity to participate in the JobZone Career Fair at American Legion Post 176 in Springfield, Virginia. The event created an important meeting place for job seekers and employers representing government, law enforcement, technology, cybersecurity, education, financial services, and other career fields.

The success of the day was about more than attendance. It was about reaching people at different points in their career journeys, listening to what they needed, connecting them with employers, and helping them think more clearly about their next step.

JobZone Creates the Connection
JobZone provides something that remains extremely valuable in an increasingly digital hiring environment: direct contact between job seekers and employers. At Springfield, candidates could speak with recruiters and hiring representatives rather than relying only on online applications.

The people I met represented a wide range of interests and experience, including information technology, cybersecurity, human resources, administration, recruiting, case management, finance, law enforcement, and other professional areas. Some knew exactly what they wanted. Others had strong experience but needed help translating that experience into a new career.

Where VTE JourneyBridge Fits
The Springfield event also demonstrated the potential value of cooperation between JobZone and the VTE JourneyBridge Framework™. JourneyBridge is not intended to replace JobZone, workforce organizations, employers, career counselors, veterans organizations, or other existing programs. Its purpose is to help bridge the gaps between them.

People First. Systems Second. Programs Third.

Through Taylor Review™ conversations, job seekers could look beyond the immediate question of “What job are you looking for?” and consider a broader set of questions: Where are you now? Where are you trying to go? What strengths and experience do you already have? What gaps or barriers remain? What is
the most practical next step?

A job fair can open the door to an employer. JourneyBridge can help an individual determine which door makes sense and what preparation may be needed before walking through it.

Employers Are Part of the Bridge
The employer side is equally important. Employers need qualified candidates, better alignment between vacancies and available talent, and a clearer understanding of where applicants may need additional credentials, preparation, or experience. This is where the Organizational Taylor Review™ can complement
the Individual Taylor Review™.

Job Seeker → Readiness → Employer → Opportunity
Gap Identified → Resource/Partner → Preparation → Opportunity

Cooperation Rather Than Duplication
One of the most important lessons from Springfield is that we do not need to recreate good programs that already exist. We need to connect them. JobZone already brings employers and job seekers together. VTE JourneyBridge can add a navigation and readiness layer that helps people assess where they are, identify
gaps, and connect with the right resources.

I especially appreciate the cooperation and encouragement of Janet Giles and Wyatt at JobZone. Their willingness to provide VTE an opportunity to engage job seekers and employers in a real-world setting gives us the chance to listen, learn, test the JourneyBridge concept, and continue improving how it can
support individuals and organizations.

Looking Ahead: The Next JobZone Career Fair

We are looking forward to continuing this work at the next JobZone Career Fair:

How We Should Measure Success
Success should not be measured only by how many people walk through the door of a job fair. We should also ask whether they left knowing their next step, whether they identified employers that matched their capabilities, whether they understood any gaps between where they are and where they want to go, and
whether someone helped them determine what to do next.

That is where I believe the cooperation between JobZone and the VTE JourneyBridge Framework™ can make a meaningful difference.

JobZone creates the connection.
JourneyBridge helps navigate the journey.
Employers provide the opportunity.

Community, education, workforce, veteran, and support organizations can help close the remaining gaps. Together, we can move from simply hosting programs to building pathways that people can actually navigate.

That is what “Bridging The Gap” is intended to mean.
